Major Project
- Critical Challenge Question
How can the use of current communication technologies best support secondary students with the social aspects of their learning in a blended learning environment?
The context
The implementation of British Columbia’s new curriculum, will replace the Planning 10 and Graduation Transitions courses with the Career Education curriculum. This change, gave us an opportunity to redesign the delivery of Career Education 9-12 at the Gulf Islands Secondary School. The GISS Transitions Program, is a four-year linear program aiming to consistently support our students throughout their four years of high school. In grade 9, the course will be delivered in a traditional classroom setting within the students’ timetable and, for grades 10, 11 and 12, the courses will take place outside the timetable through the school’s blended learning program (Shift).
A big challenge to the success of the GISS Transitions Program, is to be able to maintain the social aspect of learning during the 10, 11 and 12 grades as the students will not be meeting regularly with the teaching team and their peers.
The deliverable
My major project aims to review the framework proposed by the Community of Inquiry model and the Connectivist theory in order to help us design a course and activities that contribute to maintain the social aspect of learning. The product a slide show that explains the Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS) 9 - 12 Transitions Program and the four-year plan to implement it through the whole school. This slide show will be used to aid a presentation at the Vancouver Island Career Educator's Association Conference on April, 2017.
